International Women's Day: Dinny Hall
Q&A with jewellery designer and Founder, Dinny Hall.
What inspired you to choose your career…
Since picking up a pencil at three years old I’ve been drawing and designing all the time and growing up in a bohemian 1970’s environment made me very visually aware. I came across people who inspired me as a child. For example, The Avengers had been filmed near our village and I was obsessed with Emma Peel. I was encouraged to go to Art School but although I loved fashion I hated sewing - eventually I went on to study Jewellery Design at Central St Martin’s & never looked back.
Based on your own experience, what advice would you have for women wanting to get into your industry, or start a business of their own?
First, be truly sure of your own ability - that’s hard to measure but you must be your best critic. Secondly, if you aren’t so sure of your own ability, be a warrior and never give up.
What do you love most about being positioned in Marylebone Village?
Marylebone Village has not been completely taken over by international chains - the future of our London high streets depends on inspiring independent brands who aspire to operate both beautifully and responsibly rather than dominate globally and fiscally. When an opportunity to set up in Marylebone Lane came along I seized it - after all ‘it takes a village’.
